Migration Registration and Stay

After entering the Russian Federation, a foreign citizen must take several mandatory steps: register for migration tracking, obtain a patent or other basis for work if needed, and keep track of the period of stay. Below is the key information for each step.

Main Procedures

Migration Registration

The arrival notification is submitted by the receiving party — the employer, the property owner, or a relative.

  • Deadline: usually 7 working days from the date of entry; for EAEU citizens, the deadline is longer.
  • Documents: arrival notification, passport copy and notarised translation, migration card, housing document.
  • Result: the tear-off part of the notification with an acceptance stamp.

Work Patent

A foreign citizen from a "visa-free" country applies for the patent independently.

  • Filing deadline: 30 calendar days from the date of entry.
  • Renewal: by a monthly advance income tax payment.

Extension of Stay

Grounds — an employment contract, education, a patent, or filing documents for a TRP.

Temporary Residence Permit (TRP)

Grants the right to live and work in the issuing region for three years.

Residence Permit

Usually an indefinite document, issued after the TRP.

Admission to Russian Citizenship

General and simplified procedures; the list of grounds is set out in the citizenship law.
